PRESS RELEASE: CIBE URGES MEMBER STATES AND COMMISSION TO ACT RESPONSIBLY AND WITH COMMON SENSE

 

With its proposal to ban neonicotinoids, including in pelleted beet seed, DG-SANTE, followed by some Member States, deliberately ignore data gaps in the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) impact assessments as well as recent evidence with regards to sugar beet. European Beet growers repeatedly presented their case based on sound analysis and facts.

Vendredi prochain, les États membres européens se prononceront probablement dans le cadre de la SCOPAFF sur l’interdiction ou non de trois matières actives présentes dans certains produits phytosanitaires en raison de leur impact éventuel sur la santé des abeilles. Les trois matières actives en question appartiennent à la famille des néonicotinoïdes et sont cruciales pour la culture de la betterave et de la chicorée en Belgique. En cas d’interdiction, la Confédération des Betteraviers Belges (CBB) demande certainement une exception pour ces deux cultures.

PRESS RELEASE: NEONICOTINOID BAN COULD BE THE END FOR SUGAR BEET IN AUSTRIA

 

The EU Commission also wants to ban neonicotinoids in beet cultivation, although beet do not flower and therefore transfer of the substance to bees cannot take place. If sugar beet farming dies in this way, only the import of sugar from uncontrollable, non-European sources remains. Bees are not helped, thousands of farmers are threatened.

JOINT LETTER: CIBE, CEFS AND EFFAT URGE THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND MEMBER STATES TO STAND FIRM IN SUPPORT OR 98 EUR/TONNE DUTY

 

CEFS, CIBE and EFFAT understand that in the context of the ongoing trade negotiations the European Commission has offered the Mercosur countries an annual tariff-rate quota of 100,000 tonnes of sugar at 98 EUR/tonne duty. This is a substantial quantity that is higher than the annual output of some factories.

Such alternatives will most likely have to consist of a combination of techniques and approaches. To develop and successfully implement these will require time, several years and considerable financial investment.
